Asian Games 2023: 2 players will be the flag bearers of the Indian team in the opening ceremony, IOA announced the names
New Delhi. Indian women boxer Lovlina Borgohain, Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh have been appointed as the flag bearers of the Indian contingent for the 19th Asian Games (Asian Games 2023). The opening ceremony of the Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China on 23 September. Lovlina had won a medal in the 69 kg weight category in the Tokyo Olympics. She won the gold medal in the World Women’s Boxing Championship held in New Delhi in March this year.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday decided to create joint flag bearers for this continental tournament. This time a total of 655 Indian players are participating in the Asian Games, which is the largest contingent of the country so far.
Indian party’s party chief Bhupender Singh Bajwa told Bhasha, ‘We have taken this decision today after much deliberation.’ Indian Wushu Association chief Bajwa said, ‘This time we will have two flag bearers for the Asian Games – hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and boxer Lovlina Borgohain.’ Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
Will the hockey team get a ticket for Paris Olympics?
Harmanpreet is one of the best dragflickers in the world and was part of the historic bronze medal winning team at the Tokyo Olympics, ending the Indian hockey team’s Olympic medal drought of more than four decades. The Indian men’s hockey team will be eyeing a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games to secure automatic qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Along with Bajwa, there will be four sub-team heads in the Asian Games. He is also the chairman of the ad-hoc committee constituted by the IOA for wrestling.
