On the first day of the Asian Games, a hockey match was played between India and Uzbekistan. Team India has registered a resounding victory in this match. Forward players from India performed brilliantly. Team India defeated Uzbekistan in this match by a huge margin of 16-0.

There were 8 different goalscorers for Team India in the match played against Uzbekistan. Out of which three players scored their hat-trick goals for India. For India, Lalit Upadhyay (7′, 24′, 37′, 53′), Varun Kumar (12′, 36′, 50′, 52′), Abhishek (17′), Mandeep Singh (18′, 27′, 28) ‘) Amit Rohidas (38′), Sukhjeet (42′), Shamsher Singh (43′) and Sanjay (57’) scored the goals. With this win, three-time Asian Games champion India moved to the first position in the men’s hockey Pool A standings. Two teams from each pool will reach the semi-finals.

The Indian men’s hockey team, ranked third in the FIH rankings, came to the Hangzhou Games after winning the Asian Champions Trophy title last month. Despite starting without captain Harmanpreet Singh, India adopted an aggressive attitude from the beginning and defeated world number 66 Uzbekistan badly. After seven minutes of the match, Lalit Upadhyay made India’s score 1-0 by beating the Uzbek goalkeeper at the penalty corner. A few minutes later, Varun Kumar doubled India’s lead from another penalty corner. The first quarter ended with the scoreboard 2-0 in favor of India.

India continued their dominance in the second quarter as well and scored two quick field goals through Abhishek and Mandeep Singh. Lalit Upadhyay scored his second goal and the team’s fifth from close range. Mandeep Singh then completed his hat-trick by scoring two goals in two minutes and India took a strong 7-0 lead at half time. After the break, India added nine more goals and won the match 16–0. The next match of the Indian men’s hockey team will be against Singapore on Tuesday. The men’s hockey tournament at the Asian Games 2023 is also an Olympic qualifier, with the gold winning team qualifying for Paris 2024.
