New Delhi: Uttarakhand’s para-badminton player Prema Biswas, who participated with the help of crowdfunding in the Para-Badminton International Tournament being played in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia, has won a bronze medal for India. The whole country is proud of his amazing feat. Para-athletes from a total of 15 countries took part in this tournament which ran from 5 to 10 September. It was not an easy task for Prema to win this medal. He had to face a lot of difficulties in arranging money for sports kit, return flight tickets from Indonesia and accommodation there.

This 34-year-old female para athlete had told that she had contacted the administration for financial help. But no one paid attention to his appeal. Prema was in dire need of money to travel to Indonesia, so a man from Haldwani extended his helping hand. Hemant Gaunia from Haldwani took to social media to help them and started a campaign there. With the help of which Rs 1.2 lakh was raised in just 10 days and due to this help she was able to participate in this tournament.

After winning the medal for India, Prema said that if the state government had given me a job as per the sports policy, I would not have taken money from anyone. I did not have the necessary sports equipment and even a court where I practiced. But I endured everything and managed to make my country proud. I thank all the people who helped me experience this historic moment in my life.

Prema further said that I still remember my childhood days when children used to refuse to play badminton with me after seeing me in a wheelchair. That’s when I decided that one day I would play on a stage where very few people can reach. Despite all these tough challenges, I have won my first international medal. My next goal is to play in the Olympics, but I currently lack the resources to achieve it. If I get help from the authorities, I can prove that people with disabilities can also succeed in sports.
