Job Description :
The Global Surgical Education Coordinator (GSEC) is a position with the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT) at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) at ZSFGH. IGOT is an initiative within the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery that aims to improve the quality of musculoskeletal care globally through academic partnerships with orthopaedic programs in developing countries. IGOT supports local and international courses, educational exchanges, and regionally-driven research projects that aim to change clinical practice and policy. This position is a rehire into a recently vacated position.

The GSEC, in coordination with the IGOT Program Director, IGOT Leadership Group, UCSF Faculty, and the Departmental informational technology group, will work to refine existing educational programming and develop new educational content and organization. programs and foster the development of new surgical education programs including our IGOT Portal (online learning platform) to meet the needs of IGOT’s partners. IGOT has existing surgical education programs including our Annual SF International Summit, International SMART (Surgical Management and Reconstructive Training) Courses, and an open-source online learning platform – the IGOT Portal. The educational offerings specifically support low- and middle-income countries.

The GSEC would work under guidance of the Executive Director of IGOT and the co-directors of Global Surgical Education. The position would work on organizing and coordinating of the IGOT Portal and annual courses and conferences working alongside course directors. A critical component of the position will include management and preparation of organizational templates, program evaluation databases, and impact metrics. The GSEC will assist in identifying funding opportunities and support the growth of these programs through regular fundraising efforts.
The GSEC will also be responsible for certain assigned administrative tasks, including but not limited to administrative preparation for bi-monthly leadership meetings, annual review of programs, and event planning, coordination, and execution under the IGOT Director.

Department Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF provides expert treatment for all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries including inpatient and outpatient surgical care, rehabilitation, and orthotics and prosthetics. Our physicians have specific training and experience in a broad range of orthopaedic specialties such as sports medicine, trauma, joint replacement, pediatrics, oncology, spine, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, and hand. The Department is internationally recognized for its work in patient care, education, and research. Our basic and translational research programs focus on cartilage and disc regeneration, fracture healing, molecular and stem cell biology, bioengineering, and musculoskeletal development.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS)
Comprehensive knowledge of administrative practices, both in written and verbal correspondence/interaction
Project management skills including the ability to communicate effectively with a team and leadership
Thorough knowledge of public disclosure and other relevant policies related to academic educational conferences and university intellectual property regulations
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Knowledge of project management software (e.g. BaseCamp, Google Docs)
Minimum 1+ years of related experience
Experience with international travel and comfort traveling in low-resource environments
Experience successfully collaborating with a multidisciplinary team
Grantsmanship and basic fundraising Experience
Project management and coordination experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in global health or clincial research methods (e.g. MPH)
Track-record of successful engagement in the development of educational programs
