New Delhi. There was a stir in Uttarakhand over a video of the country’s veteran cricketer Virat Kohli. Taking cognizance of the video, Uttarakhand High Court has sought response from the state and the Centre. Know what the court has asked.

The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday took suo motu cognizance and heard a video released by cricketer Virat Kohli regarding the lack of playgrounds for children. The court has sought a reply from the state and central governments on this matter within two weeks. The division bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal issued notice to the Sports Secretary of Uttarakhand, Urban Development Secretary and Sports Secretary of the Government of India and others and asked tough questions.

In the video, Kohli is interacting with some children. In this the ground reality of the sports sector has been exposed. There was an uproar after the video surfaced. Some children had also written a letter to the Chief Justice in this matter. The children had said in the letter that when they play cricket on ‘gali’ i.e. narrow roads, lack of space disrupts their play as well as the peace of the residents.

Ultimately the court took cognizance of the video. The court asked very tough questions to the state and central governments. The High Court said that there are no playgrounds for children at many places. Children are deprived of sports facilities. The government should tell what policy it has implemented to provide playgrounds to children. The next hearing of the case will be on October 9.

Saying that playgrounds are essential for children, the High Court has asked the government to state its policy regarding playgrounds for children. The court also asked whether there was any scheme under the Khelo India program in which playgrounds would be built for the physical development of children.

The court said that sports increases physical fitness. This requires infrastructure. These days children are spending their time on computers, mobile phones and laptops and other things. The court said that lack of physical activities also affects physical and mental development. It remains to be seen what response comes to the court’s question from the Sports Secretary of Uttarakhand, Urban Development Secretary and Sports Secretary of the Government of India.
